Last week, the 2021 Report on the State of the Legal Market was jointly released by the Center on Ethics and the Legal Profession at Georgetown University Law Center and Thomson Reuters Institute. Among the many interesting points uncovered, some key findings include:
- Technology continues to grow in importance as 84% of partners surveyed expect their firms to increase investments in technology in 2021
- Remote working is here to stay as 76% of lawyers will opt to work at least 1 day a week from home in a post-pandemic world
- There will be less business travel and fewer in-person meetings, making technology all the more important
As these trends come to fruition, your firm needs to stay competitive not only with respect to clients, but with recruiting new talent as well. Technology that got you through 2020 might not be the right technology to lead you into the future. You need technology that enables your workforce to work flexibly from any location, securely, without hurdles to accessing the documents and applications that they normally do in the office.
What does this mean for your firm?
If 2020 taught us one thing, it’s that it is possible for an entire firm to work remotely and be successful in doing so. In March, firms very quickly chose technologies that allowed them to shift from working in the office to working at home. Often, the technologies were chosen because they were already in place, easy to set up, or less expensive. Also often, these were thought of as temporary solutions as nobody predicted that the pandemic would impact business for more than a couple of months. Now that we know working remote is here to stay (in at least some capacity), it is time to consider a more permanent solution to meet all of your needs.
Consider DaaS
Cloud – and more specifically desktop as a service (DaaS) allows a firm to move their entire IT infrastructure – from servers and files to applications and even desktops – to the cloud.
DaaS is simple and requires no training. Users access their Windows desktop from the cloud, exactly as they would on a PC. The desktop is streamed from the cloud to any device and accessed securely from anywhere, any time.
DaaS is secure. All systems run within a single security framework. All servers, applications, and data are backed up and replicated by one backup and business continuity system. Regardless of where you are working or what device you’re using, you are always accessing the same applications and data from the cloud. No additional security measures are required. Your security is elastic, stretching beyond your office walls.
DaaS is scalable. Cloud is ideal for companies who may need to quickly scale up or those with changing needs during uncertain times. Firms that operate on DaaS do not need to own, maintain, or update infrastructure so they can scale up and down with little-to-no additional cost.
DaaS brings expertise. DaaS providers invest a lot of resources into security, compliance, firewalls, and other controls so their clients don’t have to.
DaaS offers centralized management. Your DaaS partner is responsible for updates, maintenance, backup, and support.
